Reference centres

Five reference centres (RC) were set up in 2005 for quality management and training within the programme. The directors of the RCs are obliged to head one screening unit in the region assigned to him/her. This screening unit serves as a reference screening unit for the training of other screening units and their staff.

The major tasks of the RCs are:

  • Screening-specific training of physicians and radiological staff
  • External medical and technical quality assurance in screening units
  • Providing support and advice for the lead programme radiologists at the screening units and their co-workers
  • Providing medical expertise for the certification and re-certification of screening units
  • Medical advisory services and support for the KoopG office and its joint partners

In 2017, the five reference centres were certified as European Reference Centres for Breast Screening by the European Reference Organisation for Quality Assured Breast Screening and Diagnostic Services (EUREF). This is the highest certification provided for by EU guidelines.

In 2023 the RCs were once again subjected to a comprehensive examination and were re-certified after achieving excellent results.
